Yoga is widely defined as stretching and many will bypass the practice of Yoga on the thought "I'm not flexible". While stretching is certainly involved, yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing strength and flexibility. Yoga is derived from the Sankrit word "yuj" which means "to unite or integrate"; yoga is a 5000 year old practice in harmonizing the body with the mind, through breath work, asanas and meditation.
Yoga is performed through variety of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through a vinyasa style movement or more slowly to increase stamina and strength. The poses are a constant, but the approach to each pose varies depending on the yoga tradition.
What I love about Yoga. As we are all unique and different, so is Yoga and Yoga is different to everyone. The great thing is anyone can do yoga, even if they don't feel like as if they are very flexible or very strong enough, these and many other things will improve with time. Each client will have an individual experience with their practice as it develops over time. The beautiful thing about yoga is that ones practice is always evolving and changing, so it never gets boring. Although the poses themselves do not change, the relationship to them will.
